Voltage Drop Solutions for Transmission Company of Nigeria
Apo Substation: 132 kV capacitor (60 Mvar)
Nigeria’s power generation capacity is lower than half of its peak-time demand and its power supply capacity is even lower due to insufficient development of the power grid in the country. In particular, in Abuja, the nation’s capital city, electricity was available for only about eight hours a day due to a high rate of power loss during transmission from power plants, which are located far from the city.
In the Project for Emergency Improvement of Electricity Supply Facilities in Abuja, Nissin Electric provided 132 kV capacitors as a voltage drop solution to two substations located in the Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa, which is a state adjacent to the FCT. Delivery of the products to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) was completed in July 2018.

Reduction of Power Loss During Transmission

As a measure to improve the status of power supply in Nigeria, introduction of reactive power compensation equipment into power supply facilities was required so as to supply enough electric power even to areas far from electric power stations.
In response to this need, Nissin Electric provided capacitors for power factor correction and voltage regulation, which has consequently mitigated voltage drop at the substations and has also reduced transmission power loss, enormously contributing to the improvement of electric power quality in the country.

Technical Assistance for Local Engineers

In this project, besides the improvement of facilities, assistance to the substations’ engineers for operation and maintenance was also a key factor for continuous stable operation of the products.
As training for the local engineers, Nissin Electric gave five-day lectures at each substation, including classroom lectures and hands-on exercises, in which a total of about 30 engineers participated.

Technical Key Point
In this project, Nissin Electric provided its uniquely designed oil-filled tank-type capacitors, which have high reliability and durability proved by many years of use in both Japan and other countries. Notably, the products have an expected lifetime of more than 30 years as well as maintenance-free operation.
